2007/2008:

VICTORIA EBB TIDE - APR 6, 2008
SOBS 6 - EBB TIDE 2

Over the weekend, 25 SOBs made their way over to Victoria. About 10 SOBs ventured over early on the Friday or Saturday with their families and did the museum circuit. Meeting up on Saturday night for dinner and pub-hopping. The remaining 15 SOBs came over on the Sunday morning. The Ebb Tide were very appreciative of our big number of players and supporters.
Our drills of the past few weeks seem to have paid off, as we came out hard and spent most of the first half-in the Ebb Tide's end. The forwards worked very hard and strung together some of the longest durations of continuous possession in SOB history. Some stretches saw upwards of 10 continuous phases of driving the ball up the field. This culminated in 4 tries being scored the in the first half. Tries by JC, Bunny, Dan and Trent. We went into the half-time break with a score of 4 - 0.
The second half saw the Ebb Tide coming out a little more organized and they were able to drive over the line for a trie of their own. Again good ball retention and excellent open field support play led to SOB scores. One more for Bunny and one for Brad. The Ebb Tide were able to string one more end of the game rally together and made the score a bit more respectable at 6-2.
A good spread was put on by the host team and Brad was awarded Man of the Match.

KELOWNA (VICARS) - MAR 16, 2008
SOBS 3 - VICARS 7

Sixteen players made the journey to Kelowna this past Saturday. The weather was nasty through the Merritt-Kelowna stretch and was possibly an omen for the day ahead. The fixture was almost canceled as all of us brave soles stood in the parking lot at the venue without any opposition showing up. After a few phone calls and investigative work we found the Vicars and a park to play the game......most were already resigned to a hard day at the pub. The Vicars are always a hard team to play and today was no different......they had lots of spares and were ready to do battle. The game started off well for the SOBs with the forwards driving through 5 or six phases with Tim Bush finishing off with a try. The best rugby of the half was played in the first 5 minutes of the half. The Vicars came back with some slashing runs from their very useful backs. The SOBs had major problems with turnover ball and "The curse of silly buggers" passing skills. The Vicars went on to score 4 tries in the first half. The SOBs had a little bit of a gut check at the half time break. We decided that we didn't travel all the way to Kelowna to be embarrassed. We played with more passion in the second half and at times looked pretty good. Monster scored a nice try using his mass and desire to bring him over the line. Kelowna added two more trys before Harry crossed the line for the SOBs. The game was 6-4 to the Vicars before we gave up our last silly buggers pass to them and they took advantage running 60 yards untouched to score. Final score 7-3 to the Vicars. We enjoyed a nice meal and some beverages before making the trip home. Congrats to Mike Tupper for winning man of the match honors and the Vicars for being great hosts. Two lessons learned today (in my opinion), 1) We need to add some structure to our training sessions so we are better prepared for games. 2) We have to bring more than 15-16 players to our away games to compete (I know people have family commitments etc but, we must find a way to bring more players). We have three tough league games left this season and if we want to compete we must have the bodies out to the games and prepare for the games.

EAST-SIDE GENTS - MAR 02, 2008
SOBS 9 - GENTS 0

18 SOBs duly arrived at the Trout Lake field. However, the lawn at this field had not been trimmed for quite a while; it was long and shaggy across the entire playing surface area. We could not even see the lines, and a game on this surface would be very difficult. So it was decided to move the game to Rupert Park. Consequently, we got away a little late, and the raspberry beer from central Slurry ended up playing a significant role in the day's activities.

The East Side Gents only had 13 players, so the SOBs loaned a few to ensure we had a competitive game with contested scrums. Trent Domich, Malcolm Johnson, Carl Canuel (playing centre) Peter Reimer and Ian Stagg all switched over to the "dark side", but were amply rewarded in the clubhouse afterwards by a very grateful East Side Gents Club. Everyone thanks these players; you made the day a success. The game was played in the genuine spirit of rugby, with both sides playing a clean and hard game, with neither giving any quarter. At the end of the day the SOBs ran out 9 - 0 winners. We are not completely sure about the try scorers, but we do know that Ian Stagg scored his first try for the SOBs, and John Strothers was a whisker away from dong so as well, but someone forgot to pass the ball to our new winger. It is rumoured that Gary Willis crossed the line 3 times, Bunny and Gerrard notched a brace, while Ian Stagg and Troy got one each. If this is not correct, please contact Deano, and he will adjust the official records accordingly. The reception afterwards was first class, but there was no Man of the Match award, so I guess we all won one this week. The food was top notch, and to put the cherry on the cake, the SOBs won the 6 man boat race (with half of our first team and half of our B team) by three quarters of a beer. For the 4th week in a row the SOB’Äôs rose to the occasion and enjoyed rugby as it was meant to be enjoyed.

NOBS - FEB 24, 2008
SOBS 6 - NOBS 4

Exactly 15 men made the trip to Seattle. Exactly 15 men warmed up before the game. The 15 faced a Seattle team with 23 players. At half time 15 men were in a 2 - 2 draw. At the end of three periods the men were in a 4 - 4 draw and feeling very tired. The 15 men dug very deep, and played on without any substitution. At the end of the game the 15 men had won 6 - 4. There was not one substitution made by the SOB, each of "The 15" played for every minute, playing through several injuries. Exactly 15 tired and proud men made the trek back to Vancouver after a very fulfilling day. It is believed that only 14-1/2 men actually made it back to the South Surrey Field House! Well done to every one of "The 15", a great day out and a great result.
Man of the Match - Brad Edmonson, George Agnew

EVERGREENS - FEB 17, 2008
SOBS 4 - EVERGREENS 2

VINTAGE - OCT 28, 2007
SOBS 2 - VINTAGE 2

A wet day, but still we had 24 SOBS show up in Langley for our match against Vintage. A bit of a rivalry brewing I think. The ground was wet and soft and made for a nice landing and in fact it was in pretty good shape for some good runs which was evident throughout the game. Valley Vintage scored first but we were quick to come back and tie them up with a nice run by the backs for Davi to score easily under the posts. End of the 1/2 was 1 - 1.

In the second 1/2 the Vintage again scored first. As things progressed it seemed the Referee was calling endless penalties against us which built up some frustration, but we held fast to our defense and the Vintage could not score time after time. Once we settled down in the last 20 miniutes we were able to maintain possession for most of that time and again the backs made a nice run to see Gavin score in the centers and make it easily over the line. We had several calls not go our way in the last few minutes otherwise we would have easily won this one. Congratulations to Gary Willis for being man of the match and I am sure he was really happy when he arrived to find he was the only scrum 1/2 at the game that day.

EBB TIDE and NOBS - OCT 21, 2007
SOBS 0 - EBB TIDE 1
SOBS 1 - NOBS 2

What a day.... WET and WINDY, but 21 SOBS braved the Cold and Wet to play a 3 way with Ebb Tide and NOBS. The Tide showed up with a good number of players (25) and it showed on the field. We played for 30 minutes and for 25 we were inside the Tides 1/2 but we could not seem to finish off and get a score, they defended very well. The TIde did manage to get past us, after a unfortunate kick went astray they managed to break down the side line with 2 or 3 players in support. We came close to evening things up but could just not make it happen.

In the next game the NOBS with 9 players, and they borrowed the rest from the Tide the game was bit more open. Brad Edmondson managed to score by touching down his own kick in the end zone and things looked good for us, but the NOBS brought a few new backs who could run well and they managed to break outside to score twice on us. With only 5 minutes left we just did not have enough time to get back down in the NOBS end to score.

NOBS borrowed SOBS for the last game and managed to beat the Tide with our help. So they came with only 9 players and won both games.. go figure.

Congratulations to Scotty and Davi being selected Man of the Match and holders of the mug. Thanks to Jonathon who stepped up while Billy and Blackie were away and made a fabulous lunch.

SNOWCAPS - OCT 14, 2007
SOBS 3 - SNOWCAPS 1

We had a great day for Rugby on Sunday, warm weather and a soft pitch. The ground was a little wet from the rains the day before which made the ball a quite slippery, this was evident in the first 1/2 with many dropped balls and missed passes, but the scrumming was good once things dried up a bit and the SOBS finally got things going. It was Tony Grevilles 50th and we tried to get him the ball so he could score in the first 1/2 but he couldn't get over the line nor could any other the SOB score. The Snowcaps drew first blood with a an open side run by their full back who after a few missed tackles got the ball to the wing and a score in the corner. End of the 1st Half Score was 1 - 0 But in true SOB fashion, the second half was allot different as most of the play was in the Snowcaps 1/2 and after a penalty was awarded to us, Brad Edmondson who made a nice kick into the endzone on the far side to our Outside Center Brandur Coombs and who scored easily behind the Snowcaps defense tied up the game, it was a play right out of the RWC. We came on strong again and after some great Rucking by the forwards the backs were given the ball to find a nice overlap on the outside and Chris McBride found some space to score. Our last score was a nice play set up by Brad who drove in from fly half to set up a ruck and then managed to get the ball on the 3rd or 4th phase to score himself in the corner. Congratulations to Jim McDonald SOBS man of the match and holder of the mug and to Brad Edmondson who was awarded man of the match by the Snow Caps.

BURNABY TWITS - SEP 30, 2007
SOBS 6 - TWITS 3

The first 15 aside test of the season had about 22 SOBs out, but unfortunately the TWITs only arrived with 11 bodies. After spotting them 5 players, we had a pretty good match and everybody got lots of playing time. The TWITs, with much help from their SOB contingent, took an early 2 trie lead, but the SOBS came roaring back in the second quarter with 3 tries (Trent, Tupper and Brad) to take a 3-2 lead into the half. Some off-season rustiness was still apparent with scoring chances being missed and a few defensive lapses, but we still managed to finish strong and scored 3 more tries (Gavin, Brad, JC) to the TWITs 1. Final score SOBs 6 - TWITs/Sobs 3. Man of the Match honors went to Brad and Gavin (in his first SOB game).

VICTORIA 10-ASIDE FESTIVAL - SEP 8, 2007
SOBS 3 WINS - 1 LOSS (9 TRIES FOR - 5 AGAINST)

Perfect weather for a tournament only saw 14 SOBs (6 backs, Rob as utility man, and 7 forwards) board the ferry for Victoria (good thing we were only playing 10-aside). We started out strong with a good win against Nanaimo (4-1). The second game saw us up against a strong Velox side and we lost a close game (2-1). The third match was up against the team from Powell River and we again prevailed with a (2-1) margin. Our last match saw a reluctant group of sore and tired SOBs drag themselves out of the beer garden to face-off against an eager and speedy Seattle squad. We were able to stick it out for the last twenty minute game and scored a trie at the final whistle to win (2-1). Very good defensive play saw us through the tournament. 9 tries were scored on the day by Dean (3), Gary W., Harry, Jim E., Jonathan, Tom and Trent.

2006/2007:

SNOW CAPS - APR 15, 2007
SOBS 4 vs. SNOW CAPS 3

Game Photos

We started off strong with major possession in the SnowCaps end for most of the first quarter and had many close runs to the line in the first 15 minutes, only coming up short or losing the ball in pass or contact. It could have been a high scoring game, but the Snowcaps, who were reinforced with some good Valley Vintage players made a good game of it, with hard defense and solid tackling. After about 16 minutes we finally had a try, with Mike Tupper scoring the first one for the SOBS as he drove over the line off a loose ruck. Into the next 10 we found ourselves under pressure but stellar kicking by fly 1/2's David Blackwell and Brad Edmondson got us out of trouble. We did manage another great drive and after about 4 or 5 loose plays, Tony Greville dove over the line for his first score of the year. In the second half, the Snowcaps found some life and some space on the outside and managed to score twice in the first 10 minutes to tie up the score. Then after many attacks into the Snowcaps end the SOBS gave up another score on the outside to the Snowcaps and this seemed to wake us up, so in good SOB fashion we managed to knuckle down and come right back with Dean JC Treamblay scoring in the corner off some good back runs. In the last 20 minutes tied 3-3, we dug deep and the forwards did the work, just as well we had 20 of them, and the Snowcaps were tiring late into the game as we pushed them with hard rucks and mauls into their half and Brad Edmondson broke thru 2 or 3 tackles off a nice set play to score under the posts with only about 4 minutes left. Congratulations to Chris McBride for winning the Man of the Match Mug and to Brad Edmondson for being chosen Man of the Match by the Snow Caps.

VICTORIA "EBB TIDE" - APR 1, 2007
SOBS 5 vs. EBB TIDE 2

Game Photos

On a fantastic Day in Victoria, 20 SOBS made the trip over to play Ebb Tide at James Bay, the site of many previous losses. But on this day the SOBS came out hard taking away Ebb Tides chances with many good tackles and a display of great defensive play. Our first score was set up by JC who managed a little kick thru and then picked the ball off the bounce and managed to pass off to Trent who streaked in from about 40 yards out for his first ever try in 15 A-Side Rugby. The second score was set up by great Forward play that found the SOBS down on the Tides 10 yard mark and off the side of a ruck Mike "Bulldog" Tupper fought his was across the line for our second score. The second half saw some great plays by the forwards but it was the backs turn to have some fun, and with a nice inside move Brad Edmondosn drove across the line for our third score. Ebb Tide managed to get down inside our 22 with some nice kicking and off a very lucky bounce their inside center found his was across the line for Tides first score. Not to let up we came right back, and again Tupper found himself inside the 5 meter area to drive across for his second score. Ebb tide managed another score but with barely any time left. With only a few minutes left in the game the SOB backs had a nice play and Brad Edmondson again scored in the corner to finish off the Tide. Congratulations to Mike Tupper who was voted Man of the Match for the SOBS, and to all the SOBS that made the trip it was a great day in the history of the SOBS Rugby Club.

SEATTLE "NOBS" - MAR 4, 2007
SOBS 7 vs. NOBS 2

Game Photos

The SOBS came out in force for a game that was meant to be played in Seattle but ended up in Surrey as the NOBS could not find a suitable field. The weather was great and the grounds in good shape and the making was on the wall for a good win. Chris McBride playing at full back came out flying with 2 quick trys and that was followed by Mike Tupper and Tony Greville scoring before the end of 1/2. In the second we had scores from Les Brown, Dan Jillings and Dean Tremblay and the NOBS got on the board with their big inside center breaking through for a nice try to get the NOBS on the board. The second half was finished with Gary Willis playing for the NOBS taking a quick ball off the side of a ruck for the NOBS 2nd score. Congratulations to Chris McBride for being selected man of the match and for actually trying to chug the mug full of beer.

BURNABY "TWITS" - FEB 25, 2007
SOBS 2 - TWITS 0

What started out as an awful wet day soon turned to Sunshine for the SOBS, not only for the weather but for the game being played on the field. To quote George "dinosaur" Agnew; "I think this was probably the best team game the SOBS have ever played, as forwards and backs together as one unit". The game started with a quick penalty for the Twitts being awarded, as the SOBS had 16 players on the field to start and with Claude Patterson referring (International Level Ref) he wasn't going to miss that call. So back we went off the first whistle but as the game would soon develop, the SOBS had sound Defense lead on by man of the match "Trent the dominator Domich". After 3 or 4 good runs by the backs we finally got things going and Andy "SD" Blackburn scored in the corner at the 20 minute mark. In the second half, things started out well again for the SOBS and after a number of great Mauls and Rucks by the Forwards they were awarded when Ken "lighthouse" Scott dove past a number of players to score the 2nd try and the 2nd of his career. The Twitts pressured many times in the second half but it was great defense that kept them out time and time again. After the 3rd break with only 10 minutes left, Old Doc Narod (83) came on in his old Semi Old Bulls Jersey to play with his son Dave "nobby" Narod for about 5 minutes, it was a classic rugby moment when he came on the field and Mike "bulldog" Tupper gave him his spot. The day ended in a great feast put on by Steve "blackie" Black and many cold ones to celebrate the great win. Congratulations to Trent Domich for being chosen "Man of the Match".

VANCOUVER "EVERGREENS" - DEC 10, 2006
SOBS 1 - EVERGREENS 4

Game Photos

Perfect weather (cool, overcast and a soft field) saw 27 SOBS show up at Brockton Oval to play the Evergreens. Even though we knew the Evergreens were going to be a tough side, we came out slow and the Evergreens capitalized with 2 very quick tries. We finally settled down and traded tries before the half to see the Evergreens up by 3-1. The second half was better but we were unable to capitalize when we were in the Evergreens end, and they were protecting their lead by kicking deep on most of their possessions. Their strong backs were able to score one more trie near the end of the game to see the final score at 4-1. Although there was much chatter about the often questionable refereeing, we were outplayed on the day. Congratulations to Jonathan for receiving Man of the Match.

NANAIMO "YOOS TO BEES" - NOV 5, 2006
SOBS 4 - NANAIMO 2

25 SOBS made the trip to Nanaimo which included "Dave Noby" Narod, so you know it was going to be a good game. We had a good split of backs and forwards and took advantage of our numbers. We even loaned the Yoos To Bees 1 Prop and a Hooker to get them through the game.
As we had arrived late, the Ferry was 1/2 hour later, we had not warmed up enough to get things going early and we gave up an early score to the Yoos to Bees, but after that we never looked back only giving them 1 more in the second half off a bad blind side play.
Trys were scored by JC (2) one breakaway run and one nice back movement that had the ball go to the wing and then back to JC to score in the corner, then Dave Narod took the ball off a ruck which the forwards had rambled in from 40 yards out and Chris McBride finished them off with a nice blocked kick that found the ball in his hands and easy score.
Congratulations to "Man of the Match" Gary "Leprechaun" Willis who had an outstanding game at scrum 1/2.

VANCOUVER LEGENDS - OCT 29, 2006
SOBS 3 - LEGENDS 3

20 SOBS made the trip out to Vancouver to find the weather great and the field condition spectacular. Dressed in our Annual Halloween weekend Jerseys of mostly Canada and a few odds and sods we looked quite a site. Also with quite a few players who hadn't laced up the boots in a while we started off a little rusty, but soon things got going and with some great hard forward play and nice romps from Big Randy and Big Billy. Unfortunately the Legends scored first on an overlap on the blind side after we had most of the play going our way. Not to be out done we found our way into the Legends half again, and after a series of great rucks and "A" ball Monster managed to punch one across only to have the Ref call it back. So we started again from the 5 and soon earned our score with Billy rolling across the line for the score. The first half finished off the with the Legends scoring again off a lucky bounce from a high kick. that went into the wind and swung back into their centers hands.
In the second half we got things going again and Harry made a nice run and broke a couple of tackles even it up at 2 - 2. Once again the Legends managed to get in our end and scored in the corner off a penalty inside our 22. So playing catch up again the pack drove a number of times into the Legends end but could not mange to score. We finally received a penalty inside the Legends 22 and then we were informed by the Ref that it was the last play of the game, so we took a run at it with Craig and Monster taking on the Legends forwards in a loop and pass, and then Monster sent the ball out to Chris at fly half and he spun a fast one to the wing were Itch scored to tie up the game on the closing whistle.
Post Game food and fun was great and Congratulations to Bunny who won best dressed Man of the Match with his "Tits and Shits" (pink and white) Ladies Rugby Jersey loaned to him by Big Randy′s Jen.

KELOWNA VICARS - OCT 21, 2006
SOBS 4 - VICARS 6

BURNABY TWITS - SEPT 24, 2006
SOBS 8 - TWITS 3

Game Photos
Still having 5 players in South America and a number of injuries ("Chainsaw Bunny"), we were lucky to have a number of new recruits show up and we ended up with about 20 SOBs on a suuny day to match up against the Burnaby Twits. Excellent defence and some good support play allowed us to take advantage of the Burnaby mistakes and we were up 3-2 at the half. Another quick trie at the start of the second half, put us by 2. In the last 20 minutes Craig "Don't Talk to Me" Grossman was awarded a rare Over 40's Yellow Card and spent 10 minutes in the sin bin (something about a punch, that may or may not have been thrown at the bottom of a ruck). Craig's sin bin and some other questionable calls seemed to fire us up and we scored 3 more tries while down a man. The pack held there own, stole some ball with a seven man pack and even wheeled a Twits 5-meter scrum to force a turnover. One more late trie saw the final score at 8 for the SOBs and 3 for the Twits. We are now at 2-0 for the season.

VALLEY VINTAGE - SEPT 17, 2006
SOBS 5 - VINTAGE 1

Game Photos
A good number of SOBs showed up for our home opener, considering the wet conditions. We were well represented in both the forwards and backs, with a a number of new players making their SOB debut. Fortunately the Vintage couldn't match our numbers and the SOBs got out to an early lead with tries by Chris, Jim C. and Lefty to see us up by 3-1 at the half. An early trie in the second half by Mud-Man Andy Trann saw us go up 4-1 and a final tally by JC finished off the Vintage with a 5-1 victory for the SOBs. It was good to start off the season with a victory, and hopefully we can go 2-0 next week against another tough side the Burnaby Twits (away at Burnaby Lake). Man of the match honors go to Chris McBride and Andy Trann. New player, Ian, also celebrated his 55th b-day, which he may not remember on Monday. Thanks to Blackie for the excellent post-game food.

KELOWNA 10-ASIDE FALL FESTIVAL - SEPT 9, 2006

Game Photos
The Kelowna Fall Festival was a great success for the SOBS. We started off the Day in fine form defeating Ebb Tide 4 - 2. The day was perfect weather, overcast and cool to start and we had a strong side of 18 players split evenly backs and forwards. Next up was Edmonton where we seemed to have a problem getting things going and we came back to tie the game 2 -2. We should have won this game as we carried most of the play but were unable to get in by the final whistle. After a short break we played The Kootenay Team which was quite strong and found ourselves down at the half 3 -2 but in good SOB fashion we came back and won this game 4-3. The last game was played against Penticton which were the strongest team we had played that day and they were quite a challenge, after the 1st half we were down 3 - 0 and knew we had to work hard. We came back in the second half with 2 quick scores and then battled it out for another one and just before the final whistle Gary Sparky Willis got driven out of bounds right at the line before making the tying trie. Overall it was a great day on the field, and everyone played well for us to come away with 2 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss. After the games the skies cleared and we had warm sunny weather for the beer garden and band.

2005/2006:

CATALINA ISLAND RUGBY FESTIVAL, MAY 5-8, 2006

11 SOBS made their way down to Catalina Island, CA and joined up with 3 Snowcaps, 3 NOBS (Seattle) and 1 Vicar (Kelowna) to form the Pacific Northwest Old Growth.¬Ý The American sides were typically big hard hitting teams (we were by far the smallest side there), but they were unable to match us in rugby skill.¬Ý Our pack did a great job of stealing ball and retaining our possession, which allowed us swing the ball out wide (though the pitch was very narrow) and our backs were able to run through the opposition to score. Although there is no tournament winner (all teams receive a third place ball), we did come away with 3 wins and 0 losses out scoring our opponents 8 tries to 1. The trip was a great time. Bill did an excellent job of organizing all of our transportation and accommodations. Catalina is Golf Cart only transportation and we were to able to rent a couple to do a tour of the island. Bill′s driving caused more nervousness than any rugby action. Overall an excellent 4 days and everyone made it home safe, though Wildcats nose has looked better and Itch may not remember the trip.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, April 30, 2006
SOBS 3 - VINTAGE 3

A sunny day saw both sides with full squads and plenty of spares. The Vintage came out hard and let their talented backs loose to score a well supported trie in the first quarter. Undeterred, the SOBs marched down the field and with some good rucking were able to get the ball in front of the Vintage goal line, where Billy was able to power his way over for a trie and tie up the game.¬Ý It was then the Vintage forward′s turn to power one over the line to again go up by one.¬Ý In the second quarter the SOBs played hard with lots of pressure in the Vinatge end, and it paid off when Gary Willis was able to grubber one through to the end zone and touch in down to once again tie up the game.¬Ý Good defensive play and some mistakes by both teams kept the game tight in the second half.¬Ý Similar to the earlier trie, Dave Blackwell was able to grubber a ball into the end zone and put the SOBS up 3-2.¬Ý The Vintage were able to tie it up again at 3-3.¬Ý In the final 10 minutes the SOBs pressured hard but came up just short and the game ended in a tie at 3-3. Congratulations to Andy Trann for being sin binned. Davi for being chosen Man of the Match by the Vintage and to Gary Willis who had his name added again to the SOB′s Man of the Match Mug.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, April 9, 2006
SOBS 1 - EBB TIDE 7

Hearty SOBS made the trip to the Island on Sunday to play Ebb Tide. As expected, the Tide had a very strong set of backs and proved early with a try off the second scrum. But in good SOB fashion we knew we had them in the Forwards and rucked and mauled the Tide all over the field. Unfortunately we were not able to keep it in the pack and once the Tide got the ball they just opened it up, or went blind side, and in most cases had a 2 man overlap by the time the ball got to outside center. End of the half saw Ebb Tide up 4 - 0. In the second half the SOBS worked hard not to let the ball get outside and the Tide felt the pressure only scoring once in the first 20. Then SOBS off a nice drive off the side of the scrum by our "scrum prop half" (new position), Craig Grossman and a great ruck by the SOBS saw Tony Greville blast over the line to finally score one. In the last 10 we had few unlucky bounces and kicks from the forwards that let the Tide through and they scored twice more. To finish the game the SOBS took the ball from the Tide off the Kick Off and Rucked and Mauled into the Tides 22, using the A ball about 8 times, we set the Tide back so many times they couldn't believe it, we even had backs in helping to move the ball. In the end, we knew we had beaten the Tides Forwards for they hadn't earned a scrum or lineout inside our 22 and all the Tides scores were made by their backs. The SOB forwards can be proud of a great game. Congratulations to Tony Greville for being named "Man of the Match for the tide and also to Chris McBride who made his first tour outside of the lower mainland as an SOB. Thanks also to Rob Klatt and Dan Hargraves from the Island who came out and made our 14 and 15th players.

GAME REPORT FOR SATURDAY, April 1, 2006
SOBS 3 - SARATOGA 0

15 SOBs made the trip to Saratoga (Courtenay) with 4 more meeting us along the way. ¬ÝWe were hosted by a very spirited Saratoga team, who came at us hard from the opening whistle. ¬ÝSome good defensive play allowed us to hold off their initial surge and we were able to move the ball back down the field. The SOBs had a line-out in front of the Saratoga goal line and the forwards drew the play into the middle of the field where the ball was quickly recycled out to the backs and JC was able to score in the corner, reaching to place the ball on the goal line. ¬ÝThe spirited play and good defense continued by both teams, and the score remained 1-0 SOBs until the 3rd quarter. ¬ÝWe were finally able to wear them down and the forwards were able drive the ball up the middle where Scotty was stopped just short of the goal line, but we able to keep the ball in play and it made its way out to Brad who powered his way over the trie line to put us up by 2. ¬ÝFollowing the kick-off the pack worked hard to move the ball up the field and make space or the backs. With a bit of an overlap and some good ball handling, Carl was able to set up Gary Nay for our third trie. ¬ÝFinal score was SOBs 3 and Saratoga 0. Back to the Saratoga clubhouse where we were treated to Oysters, Salmon, Beef and Chicken. Well deserved Man of the Match honors went to Brad. ¬ÝGood fun was had by all, and this is not a road trip to missed in the future.

SOBS 5 - NANAIMO 2

The Nanaimo "Yoos to Bees" showed up with a respectable 14 players (including Andy Trann), fortunately the SOBs had our usual 25 guys, so we were able to fill the missing spot for Nanaimo and also provide them with spares as needed. The first quarter was back and forth with the SOBs scoring first. Some good ball retention by the Forwards left an overlap for the Backs and Dave Blackwell scored in the corner. Shortly after that Nanaimo was able to break loose and score one of their own. The SOBs went into the lead again when the forwards were able to punch one over the line giving Jim McDonald a well deserved trie.¬Ý The Yoos-to-Bees were able to take advantage of a mostly fresh squad coming on for the SOBs at halftime, and quickly tied up the game at 2-2. Once the new SOB players warmed up, the game turned in our favor.¬Ý The pack retained the ball very well and provided lots of space on the outside for the backs.¬Ý Brian, Brad and JC were able to score in the corners. Final score was SOBs 5 and Nanaimo 2.¬Ý SOBs home game Man of the Match went to Bill Berrisford, who played two solid halves, one for eachteam.¬Ý Nanaimo chose Tim Tarling as their Man of the Match.

SOBS 5 - SEATTLE NOBS 0

A beautiful sunny day saw the Seattle NOBS arrive with a full side and a couples of spares.¬Ý The SOBS were coming out of the woodwork and had almost two complete sides, even long lost Carl Hanna made an appearance.¬Ý The dry sunny conditions caught both teams from the rainy northwest by surprise, and great difficulty was had in passing, catching and hanging on to the ball.¬Ý Through all of the sloppy play, the SOBs were able to retain enough ball to score a total of 5 tries.¬Ý An opportune knock-on by the NOBs on their own goal-line allowed Gary Willis to pounce on the ball for an easy trie.¬Ý Carl Hanna made a nice interception at the beginning of the second half and dished off to Lee Sullivan for another trie. A nice run from Brad saw the SOBs score again. Good ball retention and¬Ý a nice overlap allowed Brian to get over the line in the corner and just before the last whistle, Bunny put his soccer skills to the test and grubbered into the end-zone for the fifth trie.¬Ý The Nobs awarded Man-of-the-Match honors to Carl Hanna, and Gary Willis had his name added to the SOBs mug.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, March 5, 2006
SOBS 9 vs. EAST-SIDE GENTS/SOBs 1

The Gents only arrived with 9 players (including Scottie), so the SOBs once again filled in the oppositions 6 missing spots, leaving us with one spare.¬Ý This gave everyone lots of playing time, even those who didnˆ‚t want it.¬Ý The SOBs took control of the game right from the start with good rucking and ball retention by the forwards.¬Ý With many of the Gentˆ‚s players playing out of position, the SOB backs had lots of running room and were able to cross the try line 8 times. Trie scorers were JC with 3, Chris with 2, and Davi, Brad, Bunny and Narod with 1 each.¬Ý¬Ý A fun day was had by all, with some good-natured hijinks on the field, as SOB often facing-off against SOB on either side of the ball.¬Ý Congratulations to Jim (Monster) Elliot who had his named added to the SOB Man of the Match Mug.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, Feb 26, 2006
SOBS 3 vs. LEGENDS 1

In unLegend like fashion they only showed up to the pitch with three-quarters of a side, but with another good turnout of SOB players, we were able to fill in the missing positions for the Legends.¬Ý The Legends came out hard and spent most of the first quarter in our half with a lot of kicking, but did not really pressure the try line.¬Ý The field position turned more in our favor in the second quarter with good ball retention by the forwards and a few good runs by the backs.¬Ý Dave Narod was able to punch over the line after some good rucking and the SOBs were up by 1 at the half.¬Ý¬Ý¬Ý The play remained in the SOBˆ‚s favor for most of the second half.¬Ý The forwards played strong keeping up the pressure on the Legends and opened up some space for the backs.¬Ý Some good ball handling by the backs saw JC and Itch score a try each in the corner, putting the SOBS up 3 trys to 0.¬Ý Some spirited play by the Legends allowed them to score with an overlap just before the final whistle.¬Ý Final score SOBs 3 - Legends 1.¬Ý¬Ý Congrats to Dave Narod who was chosen ˆ¨Man of the MatchˆÆ by the Legends and to Itch who was chosen the SOBˆ‚s home game ˆ¨Man of the MatchˆÆ giving him the rite to hold the coveted beer mug for the afternoon.

SOBS 1 vs. EVERGREENS 3

The SOBS played Evergreens on a fine Sunny Day at Brocton last Sunday. Weather and Grounds were great and this is always a fantastic venue to play a game, with the Mountains and Ocean in view. Then to top that off we broke out our brand new set of SOB Jerseys and presented our Jersey sponsor John Thorpe and his Restaurant the Leela Thai Restaurant with a team jacket. Thanks to John and his wife who kindly sponsored our club for the new Jerseys. We will be making a formal framed Jersey Presentation in April to John and his wife at his Restaurant after one of our practices. If you are in White Rock area and wish to support our sponsor, or if you need a night out please support Johnˆ‚s Restaurant by giving him your business.

GAME REPORT

The SOBS came out hard and took most of the Ball in the first 20 minutes, unfortunately a few bad calls by the Ref and we found ourselves in our end giving the Evergreens a penalty which they scored from. Pressing hard a few times the SOBS could not get across the line and gave up another score late in the half after a few bad tackles. End of the half saw the score SOBS 0 vs. Evergreens 2.In the second half the SOBS had another few chances and after a nice break by Inside Center Brad Edmondson, he then passed off to roving Prop Jim Elliott who was able to cross the line and put us on the board. Towards the end of the game the Evergreens got a nice play by their backs and eventually scored on an overlap. Final Score was SOBS 1 vs. Evergreens 3 Congratulations to Man of the Match for the SOBS Gary Willis who had a fine game at scrum half and the last 10 minutes on the wing.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, Feb 12th, 2006
SOBS 5 vs. VICARS 2

The SOBS coming off a big win in Burnaby against the Twits took the momentum into the game against the Vicars. Not having beaten the Vicars in many years made it even more of a determination and you could see the serious faces driven along by Captain Kevin Bunny Bunnett. The SOBS started well and from the opening kick off ran the ball well against the Vicars, it was only lost ball in Rucks and a few forward passes that kept the game close for the Vicars. The SOBS struck first with a nice sequence of runs by the forwards and then inside the Vicars 22 the back got the ball and it was moved well to the wing where with a small overlap Davi scored in the corner. After the first 20 the SOBS pressed on again with good forward work in the loose, then with the ball moved quickly to Centre Jim Clifford who drove past his tackle to score near the posts. Just before the end of the half the Vicars pulled their socks up and as they can do made some good plays to get a overlap in the backs and score in the corner. End of the half: SOBS 2 vs. Vicars 1. In the second half the Vicars carried by their late score continued to drive hard and broke through on the inside and with a nifty move there Inside Center made it too the line to score. At the end of the 10 we had a tie game and knew we had to finish it off as we had not canalized on our chances. Right off the SOBS took control and with some great rucking work by the forwards Craig Grossman pushed to the try line with at least 3 Vicars hanging off him and managed to get over and touch the ball down. Then we took control in the last 10 minutes with a great try set-up from a beautiful little kick by Brad Edmondson to JC in the end zone.¬Ý Shortly after that the backs displayed some more good ball handling and JC got his second try in the corner. It was a great game and the weather was spectacular and we even had a few of the Old SOBS out to cheer us on, Fraser, Chase and Wozzy. The post game function was great and thanks to Blackie who served up a great lunch as he always does. Congratulations to Craig Grossman for winning Man of the Match honors as he had played the game with a very sore back and still managed to score.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, Jan 29th, 2006
SOBS 2 vs. TWITS 1

The SOBS started off 2006 with a Great Win over the Twitts. With over 25 players and many supporters the SOBS took control of the Game right from the Opening Whistle. The first 1/2 was dry and the ball moved quickly, after some great rucking and rolling play by the forwards the backs got the ball in the Twitts end and made a break only to be stopped, then with a nice ruck set up the ball got out to trailing prop Jim "Monster" Elliot who broke a couple tackles to get over the line. We held the play most of the second half and only let the Twitts in our end a few times then in the ¬Ýlast 10 minutes of the half we had a few good breaks and managed to get the ball out to the backs inside the Twits twenty two and Outside Center Harry Hough made a great inside ply to break over the line to score our 2nd. In the second half the Twitts pulled their socks up a bit and had a few good runs at us but stellar tackling by the SOBS kept the game at 2 -0. In the last 10 minutes the Twitts pressed and managed an overlap on the outside to score in the corner, and then unfortunate refereeing gave them many a penalty and advantage as it was obvious they wanted to tie but we held fast and staved off countless runs. In the end and after going 4 or 5 minutes longer Davi made a nice long safety kick to find touch and the final whistle blew. Congratulations to Man of the Match Dave Nobby Narod who was the SOBS man of the match. Afterwards lots of brown nectar was consumed to wash down the guess what.....??, Yes, Hamburgers (what a surprise) that the Twitts supplied.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, Nov. 20TH, 2005
SOBS 0 vs. LEGENDS 2

It was a foggy soggy day at Connaught Park. The first half was pretty even, but they scored off of a short line-out throw and a missed tackle. In the second half we came out strong and played in their end for 20 minutes, but couldn't punch it over. Then they scored their second try at the very end of the game off of a breakdown out on the wing. It was a good hard game, although a little too much yappin' on the field. Randy won Man of the Match and Brad won the 50-50 bottle of scotch, which was promptly drank.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, Nov. 6TH, 2005
SOBS 4 vs. VALLEY VINTAGE 7

The grounds were in good shape and weather was great. We started off well, but Vintage scored first, then in good SOBS tradition we clawed back into the game with scores from Brad, Lefty and Bunny. Then in the fourth quarter we tied up the game only to have Valley score three in the last 15 minutes from poor fielding of kicks and some missed tackles. Congratulations to Jim Elliot who played his first game at flanker in a hundred pounds. Coach Bunny said "19 players battled time to keep the game close, we did a good job and all the guys that showed up on short notice should be commended". Congratulations to the SOBS Man of the Match, Brad Edmondson for having a great game at Fly Half.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, OCT. 30TH, 2005
SOBS 3 vs. SNOWCAPS 2

The SOBS donned the Bayside Premiere Jerseys and were inspired to an unusually good start to the match against the Snowcaps. Once again we were short of backs, so we had a number of forwards playing out of position. Excellent defense meant the first half was mainly played in the Snowcaps end. Good support by the forwards allowed the backs some space and JC and Bunny were both able to score tries in the corner. This put the SOBS up by 2 at the half. ¬Ý The good play continued in the 3rd quarter allowing Billy the Prez to punch another one over the line from a penalty. This put the SOBS up by 3 going into the 3rd quarter. ¬ÝThe Snowcaps made a spirited comeback and put 2 tallies on the board before the final whistle. ¬Ý Man of the Match honors went to Bill Berrisford as the Snowcaps pick and Dave Narod (playing in the centers) got his name added to the SOBS Pewter Mug as the SOBS choice.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, OCT. 23, 2005
SOBS 3 vs. NOBS 2

17 players made the trip to Seattle and played a hard fought match against NOBS. On a wet and slippery day it was difficult to keep the ball in hand but we were much more successful than NOBS who found the wet weather to be a challenge. Great scores were made by Gary Willis, Gary Nay and Bunny and that combined with hard tackling by all and we had a great outcome. Congratulations to George Agnew being selected Man of the Match ¬Ýby the NOBS and to Gary Willis who was honorable mention. The NOBS treated us to a great Lunch at the Irish Pub and we finished off the day by celebrating JC's 40th Birthday (I am sure he didnˆ‚t¬Ý feel like working this morning) at the Pub and on the way home. We had a great Day and this is one of the trips that should not be missed.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, OCT. 2, 2005
SOBS 2 vs. YOOS TO BEES 4

17 brave lads made the trip to Nanaimo to play the Yoos to Bees on Sunday. Thanks to PC and Zeke who came up from Portland to be #16 & #17 or we would have had no subs. As usual we were slow to start and found ourselves down by 3 tries in the first half. As we only had 3 backs make the trip we had to use forwards to fill the spots, Trent Domich found himself from Front Row out to Wing and as you can imagine he did a great job. Another come back in the game saw us claw back with tries from Bunny and Andy Trann to bring us to 3 to 2 and then a late score put Nanaimo to 4. Congrats to President Billy for being selected Man of the Match.

GAME REPORT FOR SUNDAY, SEPT. 25, 2005
SOBS 5 vs. TWITS 7

This was a spirited match with lots of scoring, unfortunately we came out on the short end of the stick. A few more completed passes and we could have had a couple more scores and the tables would have been turned. The twits came out quickly and scored 2 in the first 10 minutes, but as usual we seem to play better once we have got going and warmed up a bit. Gary Willis playing scrum half made a nice dummy and left the Twits No. 8 wondering where he was and scampered in for our first score. The twitts came back and ¬Ýscored another off a well kicked ball. At the end of the first 20 we were down 2 and then our backs took control and ran in some nice trys with scores by Lefty and Brian. At the half we were tied up at 3 - 3. Then again in the second half we took awhile to get going, giving up alternate trys to the Twitts, they scored first then Lefty scored on a nice break, then they scored again, then Bunny scored on a nice inside move. It was hard to keep up with how many trys were scored, unfortunately we gave them an easy try near the end of the game when Dave was confused whether he should kick or pass the ball (too many people had told him Forwards don't kick) so he passed and they intercepted. One last score by the Twitts and you have it. 7 to 5 in favor of the Twitts. We will get them next time, had we scored a couple when we should have the wind would have been taken out of their sails, close but no cigar!!!

GAME REPORT FOR SATURDAY, SEPT. 17, 2005
SOBS 3 vs. Priest Valley 5

16 SOBS made the trek to Kelowna last weekend for an amazing weekend. Thanks to Pistol Pete for his hospitality and letting us stay at his place on the Lake. The Rugby was fantastic, we had a great game with a narrow loss to Vicars 5 to 3. Up to 5 minutes left in the game it was 3 - 3. Vicars scored quickly as we did not have much time to warm up, but once we got some timing and pace we got back into the game, we were down 3 scores entering the 2nd half and came back to tie things up with good breaks and plays by our backs. In the end we couldn't hold off their large pack and gave up a couple scores late in the game. The weather was great and everyone who made the game played great. Congrats to Bunny for being voted Man of the Match, and he got a nice hat to show off this week. After the game we were able to watch the 1st Division Game being played on the pitch and had a nice lunch provide by the Vicars. Then back to Pistols where the Rookies did the CLIFF DIVE and the Tube Challenge was on. In the end Jim "hedgehog" Clifford took the winners robe as the Tubing Champ. This is not a trip to miss... So book it now, next year it will be the Opening Festival 10 A-Side hosted by the Vicars. MARK IT DOWN - SEPTEMBER 8th to 10th, 2006
